KANSAS CITY, MO - Kansas City police said a single-vehicle car crash Thursday morning left a driver dead.

KHSB reports the accident happened on Westport Road near Roanoke Parkway sometime before 4 a.m.

Police said a man was driving a Nissan Altima eastbound at a high rate of speed of up to 90 miles an hour when he lost control of the car.  The Nissan went off the road and crashed into a concrete sign in a Papa John's parking lot.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Westport Road was shut down for at least two hours while crews responded to the crash scene.
