After spending years defending some of the biggest companies in the country and thus going up against some of the largest companies in the world, Foster Wallace has learned a little bit about working for and against some of the best attorneys in the country. We have also learned about how insurance companies and big businesses value cases. If everyone was treated fairly by the opposing party (or the insurance company) when it came to make you a settlement offer, many plaintiff’s attorneys would be out of business.
Sometimes You Need a Personal Injury Lawyer on Your Side
Most people never expect to hire an attorney and are even embarrassed needing to call an attorney to ask for assistance. It may not be in your nature to file a lawsuit. You may feel like you do not need anything from others because you were taught that sometimes things just happen that are outside your control. But many people have to realize there is nothing wrong with you (1) getting help and (2) getting compensated fairly when you have been harmed by another. Many times, you are fighting a company with an abundance of lawyers and skilled insurance claim adjusters who are trying to pay out as little as possible. You need a good attorney for these situations.
When we defended companies and insurance companies in the past, we were on calls with insurance adjusters and have learned what goes on during those calls and how they value your case. Do not trust your own insurance company because you have loyally paid them premiums for years without making a claim and you believe they will be fair with you. You need a lawyer who has tried cases and won. The insurance company pays more to attorneys who have a record of trying cases and those who have a track record of winning than those who do not try cases. Find a lawyer who has a track record of trying cases.
How to Find the Right Attorney for Your Case
So how do you find the best attorney for you? Do not just pick up the yellow pages (who does that anymore anyway?) and scroll through to look at who has the best advertisement! Further, do not always judge a lawyer on certain accolades they claim to have. Many of these supposed accolades can be bought. There are probably 10,000 Top 100 Trial Lawyers in the United States. Look to see who is highly regarded within the bar associations. Look to see who is presenting continuing legal education classes to other attorneys. More importantly, ask attorneys you know and trust for their recommendation. Most of the time, they will know best.
